Year 7 B-team kick off the season in style!

The Year 7 B-team kicked off their District Cup Campaign in style yesterday with a resounding 9-1 win over Greenwood Academy.

The match was a first outing for the team assembled only recently and they took every advantage of the opportunity to show what they can do.

Arthur Terry were always in control, scoring early in the game and never looking back. A lapse of concentration moments into the second half allowed Greenwood to capitalise but the game was never in doubt.

Goalscorers from the game were Oliver Grey (3), Miles McSheffrey (2), Toby Watts (2), Owen Brophy and an OG.

Well done to all of the squad who took part. A very accomplished performance and i'm sure a sign of real success to come! The B-team will face the winners of St Edmund Campion and Arthur Terry A-team in the next round, with that match being played on Thursday afternoon at Goodison Gardens!

Back Row - Oliver Brown, Jack Ashley, Oliver Grey, Owen Brophy, Bailey Thomson, Thierry Mellors.

Criddle Selected for West Midlands Under 17 Netball Squad!

A lot of hard work and effort has paid off for one of Arthur Terry's GCSE PE students! Elley Criddle (Year 10) has been selected to represent the West Midlands Under 17's Netball team!

The process was by no means an easy one though.... Elley was initially spotted representing her County team and invited to attend a trial session with the West Midlands squad. After a successful initial trial she was then invited back to perform once again, competing against and alongside some of the West Midlands' finest Netball talents.

After what was a nervous wait for both Elley and her family, she would soon learn that further trials would follow during the month of July. During these trials she sustained an ankle injury but was able to continue in spite of this. All the hard work prior to this had paid off when Elley found out she had been successful!

Elley will now join the academy team training on a weekly basis, continuing to develop her skill set amongst some fantastic Netball players. The opportunity is part of the England Netball National Pathway and could potentially lead to an opportunity to play at National level. We wish Elley every success as part of the West Midlands squad.

Well done Elley!!

Congratulations to House group Lincoln who claimed overall victory in the Arthur Terry School's House sports competition, which took place over the week beginning Monday 11th to Friday 15th July.

Boys and Girls in each year group were required to form their own House teams, to compete against each other in 'round-robin' style tournaments that stretched over an entire afternoon.

It was fantastic to see so many students working together and showing a real competitive spirit towards scoring points for their House Group!

Shield Victory for our U16 ‘Iron-Men’ at UKU National Championships!

Date: Sat 2nd July 2016

Arthur Terry once again entered the U16 UK Ultimate national schools championships, which took place at Moor Lane Pavilions in Birmingham on Sat 2nd July.  The team competed under the name of our traditional team ‘Arctic’ title, in a competition that had the largest number of school team entries in recent years.  Unfortunately, the Arctic squad had just the minimum number of 5 players turn up to represent the team in the 5-a-side competition, which meant that the boys were required to play every minute of every game – known in the sport as ‘iron-manning’.

After a great start in the opening match, the team unfortunately struggled to hold onto the initial lead they had taken.  After conceding a goal during the last play of the game, the result finished with a very unfortunate 6-7 defeat to ‘RGS Ravens’ (Surrey).  Two further defeats came from two of the top seeded teams in the group, ‘Flux’ (Twycross) and ‘Air Badgers 2’, but a comprehensive 9-3 win in the last game against team ‘Venom’ was enough for the team to qualify for the ‘second tier knock-out stage’ shield competition.

The opening game of this 8 team knock-out section saw the ‘Arctic’ boys take on Manchester based side ‘Hydras’.  The game was very close; with the score being level at 4-4 going into the final minute it literally came down to a next point wins scenario, which the boys managed to secure and progress through to the semi-finals.  The semi-final match was against ‘Air Badgers 3’ and this proved to be a more comfortable contest.  The boys dominated the game and secured their place in the final with a clinical 6-2 win.

A slight fairy-tale ending was presented in the final, when it emerged that the opponents for this last game would be ‘RGS Ravens’, the team that the Arctic Boys had narrowly lost to in the opening match of the tournament - …the chance to avenge this defeat and win the shield provided in one game!  The match proved to be just as close as the first game had been, which reflected in a tug-of-war type score line throughout the game.  With just 3 mins left to play the score was 5-5, and once again it looked to be heading towards the scenario of next point wins.  Using every last ounce of energy that was left in the tanks, the boys not only managed to score the next goal, but also forced a further turnover and to score another goal to extend the score-line to an unassailable 7-5 lead. After regulation time had finished, the opponents managed to score the last goal to close the play and make the official score 7-6.  This of course proved only to be a small consolation against the Arctic team who were absolutely thrilled to avenge their opening defeat and obtain the shield victory!

The final ranking for the boys was 9th place overall in the championships – but the effort, determination and teamwork that all of the 5 boys displayed throughout the day proved to be the real achievement that they could all take away and be extremely proud of.  Every opponent that they played identified the boys in their ‘top 3 spirit nominations’, which reflected the tremendous effort that they displayed throughout the day - Well done lads!!

U16 Champions Cup Winners

Match Report: U16 Champions Cup – Played at Bodymoor Heath (AVFC Training Ground)

Mon 14th March 2016
Arthur Terry 4 – 0 King Edwards Aston
Scorers
Hutchinson 3 (1 pen)
Mooring

The Arthur Terry boys put on a very dominant football display in the first half, controlling the game from the outset.  Midfield maestro Reece Hutchinson scored the opening goal with a brilliantly struck free kick from 30 yards, which proved to be just too powerful for the keeper to stop.  Hutchinson then provided the assist for Arthur Terry’s second, as Robert Mooring was well positioned to head home a well delivered corner kick.  The superb form of Hutchinson continued as he netted a further two goals before the break.  A coolly converted penalty from Reece got his second/Arthur Terry’s third and shortly after this a close range tap in went into the net to seal his hat-trick and give Arthur Terry an unassailable 4-0 lead.  As windy conditions picked up, the second half proved to be much more of a contest. After looking buried in the first half, King Edwards showed great determination and resilience and managed to shut out Arthur Terry’s attack completely throughout the second period.  Arthur Terry continued to threaten the opposition goal and went close to extending the lead on several occasions, but were just not unable to add to the first half tally. The early dominance and quality in attack from Arthur Terry’s Y11’s ultimately proved to be the decisive factor in the outcome of this game – gaining them a well-deserved victory and second trophy for the season!  ...a fairy tale ending to the season and the perfect way to end 5 great years together -
Congratulations boys!!  Proud Team Manager – Mr Byrne

The Y11 boys put on a true master-class display in the final to defeat Great Barr School 7 - 0!  Robert Mooring's first-half header opened the scoring just before the break, which set the boys up nicely for the second-half goal fest that was to follow.  Midfielder Reece Hutchinson was in superb form once again and provided many assists for the rout, with clinical finishes coming from Samuel Watts and Josiah Francis in particular.  Team captain Jack Logan also contributed to the tally with a great finish from another well delivered set-piece from Hutchinson.  Despite the one-sided score line, goalkeeper Dylan Mandaracas arguably put in another man of the match performance, with several heroic saves that kept his and the team's clean sheet intact.  The whole team however were absolutely tremendous and proved to be worthy 3rd time winners of the District Cup trophy!!

The Y12 boys came through a very closely contested final by edging out local rivals Bishop Walsh 3-2!  The game remained 0-0 at half-time and was very evenly poised; it only stayed this way though until 5 mins into the second-half when AT striker Oliver Powell was at hand to poke home the ball from close range to open the scoring. This goal provided the cue for the 'tug-of-war' scoring to begin! Walsh equalized shortly after the opener through a suberb strike that went in from outside of the box!  AT mid/fwd Alex Jones soon replied though with another 'worldy left foot finish' that sailed into the top corner from the edge of the box, restoring the boys 1 goal advantage.  The team then stretched their lead after Oliver Powell dispatched the team's third goal, after being put through to a 1v1 situation with the GK via a stunning through ball pass from midfielder Matt Greenway. With little under 10mins to play, Walsh once again scored another screamer from outside of the box to pull the score closer and set up a classic 'backs to the wall' finish! The team went on to defend brilliantly and hold out to the end, which enabled them to secure their first trophy ...which will hopefully be the first of many to come in the future!

L3 Birmingham Schools Games Triumph!!

Thursday 11th Feb

What an amazing day! - The Arthur School took three teams to compete in the L3 Birmingham Schools Sportshall Athletics Finals - having qualified as North Birmingham champions in the regional competitions two weeks ago! (See the event report from this competition in a previous post!).

Today's finals were held at the Doug Ellis Sports Centre (BCU) in Perry Barr.  Our three teams, Y7 boys, Y7 girls and Y8 girls were all competing in separate competitions, with approximately 12 other teams, coming from schools all across the Birmingham area.

The Arthur Terry Students Representing Each Team at today's L3 Finals

The competition involved a wide range of indoor track and field events - including: Sprints & Long Distance races, Multiple Relay's, Shot Putt, Vertical Jump, Broad Jump, Standing Triple Jump and Speed Bounce events.

The atmosphere throughout the competition was fantastic!!  All of the Arthur Terry students competed brilliantly and supported each other superbly. There were many notable performances amongst our students, including many 1st places in the heats and events that took place - which made for a very exciting wait as the results were announced during the closing ceremony (see picture above!)

The results:

Congratulations to our Y7 Boys - 1st Place and Gold Medal Winners!!

Congratulations to our Y7 Girls - 3rd Place and Bronze Medal Winners!!

Congratulations to our Y8 Girls - 1st Place and Gold Medal Winners!!

...to have three teams qualify for the L3 Birmingham Schools finals as regional winners was fantastic, and to now have three teams all walking away with medals from the finals - including two 'Gold's' and a 'Bronze' is absolutely amazing! - Well done to all of the students that took part on such a wonderful achievement.

Y7 Boys Reach District Cup Final!!

Wed 10th Feb

Congratulations to the Y7 boys football team who this week made it through to the Aston, Erdington and Saltley District Cup Final!

Semi-Final Result:
Arthur Terry 2 v 1 St Edmund Campion
O. Powell 2

The boys started the game very brightly, carving out several chances to score the opening goal - only to be thwarted by some uncharacteristically poor finishing.  The team did go on to take the lead though after striker Oliver Powell brilliantly dispatched a super left foot shot across the keeper and into the far side of the net.  Despite having more of an attacking threat, a heroic goal line clearance from defender Josh Glithero was required to keep the score 1-0.  After a Campion forward rounded our advancing keeper at the edge of the box and slotted the ball towards the empty goal, Josh's brilliant reaction and speed proved to be just enough to get to the ball and divert it away for a corner.  The visitors did manage to equalize thereafter, making the score 1-1 at half-time!  The second half proved to be equally competitive as the first period and there was nothing to suggest that either team held the edge over the other.  The difference and winning goal came 10 minutes before the end, after a brilliant one-two link up between Oliver Powell and Ben Haycock provided the assist for Oliver to score his second and best finish of the match!

U16's reach the District Cup Final!

Friday 5th Feb

Arthur Terry 4 v 1 Plantsbrook
R. Hutchinson
S. Watts 2
J. Francis

Man of the match: A. Thompson

U16's in semi-final action at Sutton Town FC, Coles Lane

The Y11 team faced familiar foes Plantsbrook in the semi-final of the AES District Cup, that was played at Sutton Town FC ground (Coles Lane) on Friday evening.  The boys were keen to maintain their 100% winning record against their opponents and they started the game very brightly indeed.  Arthur Terry took the lead through a wonderful strike from Reece Hutchinson, who after receiving a return pass from a quickly taken short corner, carried the ball to the edge of the penalty box before curling it right into the opposite top corner of the net!  Unfortunately, a very soft goal was then conceded after some ''indecisiveness / over-confidence'' at the back! The boys shortly restored the lead just before half-time though, after striker Sam Watts finished clinically after latching onto a through ball from midfield.  An improved Plantsbrook came out stronger in the second-half and to be fair, looked the most likely to score next.  However, Arthur Terry's defense proved to be very resilient and withstood everything their opponents had to offer.  Some real quality football from Arthur Terry then came through, as the team once again took control of the game. This led to a further two goals being scored in the second-half courtesy of striker Josiah Francis and another stunning goal from Sam Watts, who had skillfully turned his marker inside out before rounding the keeper to slot comfortably into the waiting net.

A huge congratulations to the boys!
Hopefully they will finish their final season together with another trophy to add to the many titles they have won in their previous years from Y7.

Y7 Football Team Win in Shoot-Out Drama!

Tues 2nd Feb

The Y7 football team this week hosted Kings Norton Boys in R4 of the BSSF cup.  The team (pictured above) were without AVFC academy players Kharel Reddin and Ryley Thomas, who were both involved in club commitments, but the remaining players managed to cope very well without them as they managed to defeat the visitors and progress into the semi-finals of the Birmingham Schools competition.

The game itself finished 1 - 1 at FT and remained the same after a period of additional time was played, taking the match to a penalty shoot-out.  Matt Greenway had leveled score in the second half, which Arthur Terry dominated (...making up for an AT missed penalty at the end of the first half).

In what is always a nail biting scenario, Kings Norton won the toss and elected to strike first. During the shoot out Arthur Terry GK James Pemberton produced two super saves, setting up a strike winning opportunity for Jordan Mewis who duly converted to win the tie!

The penalty shoot-out summary:

NB: Well done to all of the boys who bravely stepped up to take one!

The Y7 team are now scheduled to play Plantsbrook School in the Semi-Final!

North Birmgham KS3 Sportshall Athletics Champions!

3 out of our 4 KS3 indoor athletics teams were crowned North Birmingham Champions in the L2 schools competition, which took place at the Arthur Terry School in the week beginning Mon 25th January.

The KS3 boys competition took place on Tues 26th Jan. 8 students from Y7 and 8 students from Y8 were selected to represent their respective year groups in a range of track and field events.

Results table below:

As you can see from the results, our Y7 boys managed to secure the North Birmingham title by edging local schools Bishop Vesey and NBA into joint second place.  Sadly, our Y8 boys team fell one place short of this and just missed out reaching top spot by 4 points.  All was looking good for a double victory on the evening, until the Y8 relay team dropped the baton in the very last race of the competition!  The mistake proved to be very costly and prevented the team from having another shot at retaining the 'Overall Birmingham Schools Winners title' that they achieved last year!

The KS3 girls competition took place on Thurs 28th Jan. Once again, 8 students from Y7 and 8 students from Y8 were selected to represent their respective year groups in a range of track and field events.  Both teams performed superbly during the competition and came out on top amongst the other competing schools.

Results table below:

As you can see from the results, our Y7 girls finished in first place ahead of Highclare - 2nd and John Willmott - 3rd.  Our Y8 girls team, also 'overall Birmingham Schools Winners' from last year, absolutely smashed the points scoring by achieving the highest team tally and winning margin of the week!

Congratulations to all of the teams and the students that took part! 3 winners and 1 runner's up from Arthur Terry was a fantastic achievement for the week.  Our 3 winning teams now progress into the L3 Birmingham Schools Sportshall Athletics Finals taking place on Thurs 11th Feb at the Doug Ellic Sports Centre - (BCU campus in Perry Barr).

West Midlands 5-a-side runners up! - Y7 Boys Football

Wednesday 3rd Feb 2016

Arthur Terry U12's - West Mids 5-a-Side Runners-Up

A squad of seven Y7 boys (pictured above) represented the Arthur Terry school as Aston, Erdington & Saltley SFA champions in the ESFA U12 Indoor 5-a-side area finals today, which were held at the Pride Park Soccer Dome in Derby.

The finals included 18 schools from all across the West Midlands region (inc. Telford, Wolverhampton, Stoke, Bromsgrove & Droitwich, Rugby, Shrewsbury, Burton, Hereford, Cannock, Halesowen & Stourbridge, Brierley Hill & Dudley, Nuneaton, Staffordshire, Sandwell, Redditch, Wyre Forest and Shropshire).

The tournament was set up into 3 groups of 6 teams. The winners of each group, after playing a round robin format of 5 games would progress into the semi finals - joined by the best runners-up from across the groups!

A summary of Arthur Terry's games!
The Arthur Terry team got off to a great start winning their first two games comfortably, but in game 3 the boys incurred a narrow defeat that left the group wide open! The team bounced back immediately in game 4 by securing the highest scoring tournament victory on the day, setting up a 'group deciding' match in the last game!  With the knowledge that only a win would see the Arthur Terry team progress into the semi's, the boys performed brilliantly and they convincingly got the victory that gave them top spot in the group.

The semi-final was an extremely close match.  After taking an early lead, the boys allowed the opponents to level from the spot after conceding a penalty kick with just minutes to spare. Star player Ryley Thomas netted the winner in extra-time though, booking the place in the final and taking his personal tally to 11 goals in the tournament (Arthur Terry's highest scorer on the day!).

Having played so well throughout the day and deservedly reaching the final, the Arthur Terry boys sadly came undone against a very strong Sandwell Academy team - who were admittedly the best team there on the day, having won all their games and conceding just three goals in the process.

It was a fantastic day out and an absolutely tremendous achievement for the boys! - Being ranked as the second best 5-a-side football team from all the schools in the West Midlands is something that they can be very proud of indeed!!
