Purpose of study

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We endeavour to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, and to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

KS4 Core PE lessons continue to be delivered with the underlying aims of developing skills, applying skills into competitive situations, evaluating and improving performances and promoting the concept of leading active healthy lifestyles, but the assessment of students is completed using more specific performance criteria for each activity that is covered.

Assessment

In order to support our GCSE PE examination courses, which is delivered to students in Y9, Y10 and Y11, we assess all students in KS4 Core PE against the same  examination criteria that is used to assess students studying GCSE PE within the respective year group / cohort. After completing an activity students are awarded scores against the performance criteria; a combination of which is then used to formulate an overall working at grade (WAG).

The links below will lead you to documents that contain the specific performance activity criteria that is used to assess our students in KS4.

Students in Y11 will continue to be marked using the edexcel GCSE PE examination criteria:

Students in Y9 and Y10 will be marked using the new OCR GCSE PE examination criteria:

The Curriculum Programme

In Year 9 students have x3 1-hour PE lessons per/fortnight and remain in fixed groups throughout the year. Each group follows a prescribed programme of study that includes an alternating range of activities from different activity profiles. NB: Boys and Girls are taught separately and groups are formed by taking into account several factors, including ability and social dynamics of the students.  NB: There is no specific ability 'setting policy' for our students!

We offer our older students in KS4 the opportunity to help shape and personalize the programme of study by completing a questionnaire at the end of Year 9 and 10 respectively, highlighting the consensus of preferred activities. We then use this information to help shape and form our curriculum in Years 10 and 11, where students have x2 1-hour PE lessons per fortnight.

In Year 10 and Y11 students remain in fixed groups throughout a set rotation of activities at the start of the year, after which time opportunity may be given for students to opt into activities of their choice.  Naturally, the number of groups and resources available condition this process.
Further opportunities may also emerge for Y11 students to experience alternative options to regular school activities, via our ability to secure the use of outside agencies such as external coaches or the use of local clubs and facilities! In previous years we have utilised local sports venues such as 'Fitness First' in Mere Green, Wyndley Leisure Centre and Sutton Park for various sports and exercise sessions.
