North Birmingham KS4 Badminton Champions!

Monday 14th December 2015

The Arthur Terry School entered the North Birmingham Schools KS4 Badminton competition, which was held at the North Birmingham Academy school this evening. The team was represented by four boys from Y9, Sam Palmer, Dan Evans, Tom Wilcox and Jack Hawkins.

KS4 boys badminton team
The competition format:
Six Teams (including Arthur Terry) entered into the tournament.  The schools/teams were split into 2 groups of 3; each team playing each other once; the top ranked teams in each group progressing through to the final to determine the overall tournament winners!

Each match included two singles (between top two seeded players) and three doubles games, all being played first to 11 points! NB: Winners of each match decided by the total number of games won.

Group A: Arthur Terry; Fairfax (A-Team) and Bishop Walsh.
Group B: Fairfax (B Team); Bishop Vesey and N.B.A

Tournament/Match Reports:
The Arthur Terry boys first group match was against Fairfax-A.  The first 4 games in this tie were equally taken, leaving the match evenly poised at 2 - 2 going into the final doubles game (...to be played by Dan and Tom). After taking a 9 - 4 lead within the game, the match looked certain to be won, however the score line shortly went to a nail biting 10 - 10 ...Next point the winner scenario!! Fortunately the boys held their nerve and secured the decisive point to beat Fairfax 3 - 2 overall.

The second and final group game against Bishop Walsh followed a similar pattern to the first! After the first 4 games were equally taken, leaving the score at 2 - 2, Dan and Tom once again had the pressure of needing to win the final doubles game that would win the match and enable the boys to top the group!  Fortunately, the blood pressure of those spectating was kept reasonably low during this game as we witnessed the boys display a very dominant performance, winning the game 11 - 2.

The boys then waited patiently for the remaining group matches to be completed to see who they would face in the final!

Overall group standings:

Group A: 1st Arthur Terry; 2nd Fairfax (A-Team); 3rd Bishop Walsh.
Group B: 1st Bishop Vesey, 2nd N.B.A; 3rd Fairfax (B Team);

The final match was against Bishop Vesey and yet again, it followed a similar pattern to the earlier games of the evening. The opening 4 games were shared equally between the finalists, leaving the score 2 - 2.  This time, Dan Evans 11 - 8 victory in the singles and Sam & Jack's 11- 7 doubles triumph provided the 2 wins going into the deciding game.  Having been in this position twice already, Dan and Tom's doubles partnership again had the responsibility of securing the final game that would this time 'win the team the tournament!'  The formidable partnership came through once more as they completed a personal hat-trick of wins on the evening, winning the final and decisive game 11 - 6 overall! NB: Dan's ninja reflex to return and help win the next point at 2 - 4 proved to be a major turning point and contender for shot of the tournament!

Huge congratulations to Sam, Dan, Jack and Tom who are now crowned North Birmingham KS4 Schools Team Champions for 2015! - Going one better than our KS3 team runners-up last week!

All the boys contributed valuable points in the matches played and displayed some fantastic performances en route to their championship success! NB: The team's tournament results can be seen in the table below.

Five schools (including Arthur Terry) entered into the tournament, which followed a round robin / league format. Each school played a match against each other, which included two singles and three doubles games, all being played first to 11 points! NB: Winners of each match decided by the total number of games won.
The team warming-up before the tournament!
After playing all four matches / 20 games, The Arthur Terry boys finished with an outstanding 17 wins and just a mere 3 defeats in total. Sadly the 2-3 match defeat inflicted by Fairfax, who were fortunate to have two 'county' badminton players in their squad, proved to be the decisive match of the evening which saw Arthur Terry finish overall runners up to the victors in this game. 5 - 0 whitewashes came in the matches over Bishop Vesey, Bishop Walsh and the competition hosts N.B.A, cementing Arthur Terry's 2nd place finish in the competition.

NB: Overall tournament standings were: 1st Fairfax; 2nd Arthur Terry; 3rd Bishop Vesey; 4th N.B.A and 5th Bishop Walsh.

District Cup Semi-final here we come!

Wednesday 2nd December 2015

John Willmott 1 v 4 Arthur Terry Scorers:
R Thomas, K Reddin [2], O Powell

Match report:
The Arthur boys came into this Qtr Final replay knowing ...if they take their chances and limit their unforced errors in key areas, the game would be theirs for the taking and would stand a great chance of progressing into the district sup semi-finals!  The first half proved to be a very dominant performance indeed. Solid defending from the whole team meant that keeper James Pemberton did not have a single save to make in the entire half. Standout performer in the opening period was defender Ross Lewis, who made several outstanding tackles, blocks and covers - in addition to playing the ball out with composure from the back. Despite controlling the game, Arthur Terry only managed to take a narrow 1-0 lead into the break. Riley Thomas (playing wide right) showed real quality as he picked up the ball on the right hand side and with a quick change of pace, skinned his opponent to take the ball into the box before dispatching a powerful shot across the keeper into the side netting. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first period, but this time the boys were much more clinical in taking the chances that they created. Nb: Unfortunately this did not come until our star man from the first half had leveled the match for the opposition by putting the ball into his own net! - Unfortunately a little mix up at the back and shanked clearance was at fault! The introduction of Kharel Reddin proved to be quite a difference between the sides! Kharel managed to hit the back of the net twice, with two brilliantly taken goals - his super footwork and skill was used to carve out two chances for himself and the final strikes for both goals were truly top class! Nb: Ross also helped to make amends for his early Xmas gift to the opposition by supplying a super ball up to Kharel, which set him on his way for his first goal. Kharel's hat-trick was unfortunately denied after another tremendous shot came back of the post! However, partnering striker Oliver Powell was at hand to score his fourth goal in three consecutive games - sealing the victory 4-1 victory and securing the team's place in the district cup semi-finals, which will be played against St Edmund Campion in the New Year!

Man of the match:
1st Half: Ross Lewis
2nd Half: Kharel Reddin

Wednesday 25th November 2015

John Willmott 3 v 3 Arthur Terry
Scorers:
K Reddin, O Powell [2]

Match report:
After a very competitive game, the two teams could not be separated! The FT score finished 3-3, and with poor light conditions it was agreed that the tie would be replayed in the following week.  The match itself proved to be a case of missed opportunities and costly errors for the Arthur Terry boys!  The team's super AVFC academy striker Kharel Reddin scored the opener with a stunning first half strike, unfortunately though, the boys went into the break 1-2 down after conceding two goals from the only two shots/attacks that the opposition made. To their credit, the finishes were 'worldy type efforts' that left our District Keeper James Pemberton little to do but admire them, however slack defending prior to each goal was certainly the focus of the half-time team talk.  As the second half got underway the Arthur Terry boys responded fantastically and produced an absolutely dominant opening 15 minutes of play, where in the lead was deservedly restored. Oliver Powell provided two fantastic finishes to some wonderful moves, making the score 3-2 in Arthur Terry's favour. The boys had two great chances to extend the lead further, but unfortunately the first effort cannoned off the cross bar and the second was ruefully put over the bar from close range. The opponents equalizer eventually came in the last few minutes of the game, after limp defending and bad decision making once again presented an opportunity to the home side that was clinically taken.

Man of the match: Kharel Reddin
For a superb first half strike and absolutely stunning second half display. His silky skills and footwork was used to a more penetrating effect, helping to assist Oliver Powell and create other opportunities for his teammates that unfortunately went unconverted!

BSSF R3 Victory for Y7A Team

Tuesday 1st December 2015

Arthur Terry 3 v 1 Turves Green
Scorers:
A Jones; R Thomas; O Powell

Match report:
The Y7 Boys progressed into R4 of the BSSF cup with a fantastic 3-1 victory over Turves Green Boys school.  The first half was evenly fought, but Arthur Terry deservedly took the lead when Alex Jones  opened the scoring after making a timely run into the box to slot in a great cross from Riley Thomas.  Shortly into the second half Riley doubled the lead after beating the opposition keeper to a through ball from Matt Greenway, coolly lifting it over the keeper before finishing on the half volley into the empty net. Turves Green battled hard to keep in touching distance of the score and somehow managed to prevent themselves from going 0-3 down after making several unbelievable goal line clearances! The 2-0 score line actually became 2-1 before Arthur Terry finally put the game to rest with a third goal, courtesy of Oliver Powell's excellent run into the box and clinical finish.

NB: The absence of goal line technology prevented Matt Greenway from getting his name on the score sheet in the final minutes of the game, but hopefully he took some solace in being awarded man of the match after displaying another commanding and influential role in center midfield!

Rd4: Arthur Terry vs. Kings Norton Boys (Date TBA)

Man of the match: Matt Greenway

Progress in the Cup for our U12 A-Team!

Tuesday 17th November 2015

Arthur Terry 3 v 1 North Birmingham Academy
Scorers:
C McDowell; A Jones; R Thomas

Match report:
The Y7 Boys Football A team extended their undefeated season yesterday with a superb 3 - 1 defeat over North Birmingham Academy school in the AES district cup.  The visitors provided a competitive challenge for our U12 boys, but in the end a dominant performance earned the boys a well deserved and comfortable victory. Midfielder Corian McDowell was at hand to open the scoring in the first half, after dispatching his effort from just inside the box after receiving a ball that had been parried out by the opposing keeper.  Arthur Terry's second came shortly after, after Alex Jones' effort from inside the box looped perfectly over the line, just beating a last ditch attempt from the keeper to save it.  AVFC Academy starlet and team Captain Riley Thomas wrapped up the soring just before half-time with a clinical finish from what was a tight angle, sliding the ball underneath an advancing keeper that was helpless to keep it out.  Windy conditions make the second half difficult for both teams, but it was the Arthur Terry boys once again that controlled the most of the half.  Defenders Ross Lewis and Zak Russell worked extremely hard in the game, both putting their bodies on the line at various stages to block shots and clear the ball out from danger, but sadly the clean sheet was foiled after the visitors managed to score a late consolation goal.

Man of the match: Matt Greenway
Very difficult to select one player with so many strong performances, but center midfielder Matt played a commanding role in the middle of the park - reading the game very well, setting up chances in attack and being at hand to defend when needed also.

U16 Football team back to their best!

Wednesday 11th November 2015

AES District Cup Quarter-Final
Bishop Walsh 2 – 4 Arthur Terry
Scorers: Watts 2, Francis 2

Match Report:
The U16 boys travelled across to local rivals Bishop Walsh School this week, hoping to avenge last year’s defeat in the regional district cup final!  The game started with an early kick-off and the Y11 Arthur Terry boys wasted no time in making an immediate impact by taking a 2 goal lead within the opening 10 minutes.  The opener came from Sam Watts, who was at hand to convert a superb ball that was delivered into the box. The second came minutes later from striker Josiah Francis, who finished clinically past the keeper after holding off several challenges during a strong run towards the goal.  Walsh pulled a goal back around the 20 minute mark, but our Y11’s continued to dominate the game and went 3 – 1 ahead before the HT break with another fantastic strike from Josiah Francis who curled in an effort off the far post from just outside the area.  In the second half the home side pulled the score closer, after capitalizing on their 'Rory Delap' throw-in tactic, but Arthur Terry once again restored the two goal margin within minutes of conceding the second. Striker Sam Watts completed his brace after finishing off an absolutely stunning counter attack, that included several link up's of one and two touch passes, excellent movement and a wonderful delivery to assist the awaiting finisher. From then on the game continued in the same fashion and the U16 boys put on a real show of football class to control and see out the game that finished 4 – 2 overall, securing the team’s place in the semi-final.

NB: Arthur Terry U16 now wait  to play the winners of Stockland Green vs. Plantsbrook.

Match reports
The Arthur Terry U12 B team got their Division 2 league campaign underway today, with two emphatic wins against Hodge Hill A and Hodge Hill B teams.
Game 1: Early into the match, Hodge Hill-A caught Arthur Terry off guard and took the lead with an erroneous strike that looped in over keeper Chad Slack from outside of the box.  The Yr7 boys soon settled down though and took control of the game, levelling shortly after courtesy of another super finish from U12B team goal machine, Oliver Parry.  Oliver netted his second later in the half and fellow forward Dylan Phipps also bagged a brace to secure a well-deserved 4-2 win ...and 3 league points!
Game 2: This match proved to be quite a different challenge compared to the contest in Game 1. Although the opponents played bravely, they were simply no match for a rampant Arthur Terry team that dominated the game, with six different players hitting the back of the net.  The goals came via a range of good build up play, super assists and well taken individual strikes!  The pick of the goals from the 6-0 rout probably came from defender Harry Hatch, who it a super left foot strike from outside the area leaving  absolutely no chance for the opposing keeper to save it!

Early Cup Exits for the U16 and U12-B Teams!

Friday 9th October
U12 Arthur Terry B          4 v 5       Greenwood Academy
Scorers:
J Mewis; O Parry; F Sweeny

Match report
This was a valiant first outing for the Y7 B squad, which ruefully ended in a narrow margin defeat!  The Arthur Terry boys found themselves two goals down early on into the game, before team captain Jordan Mewis netted the team’s first official goal.  A ‘cat and mouse’ score line then continued throughout the game!  After Arthur Terry conceded a third, Oliver Parry scored the first of his brace right on the stroke of half-time to make the score 2-3 to the visitors.  In the second half 2-3 unfortunately became 2-4, but once again Oliver Parry replied soon after by netting his second – a superb solo run through the opposition defence before smashing the ball past the keeper.  Disappointingly 3-4 became 3-5, via a series of very unfortunate and costly errors at the back!  The boys’ determination and perseverance however, yet again saw them pull the score line closer, after midfielder Fynn Sweeny slotted home Arthur Terry’s fourth goal from close range.  At 4-5 the boys’ pressed hard for the equaliser, but were thwarted twice by the opposing keeper in two one-on-one chances that were created!  Overall, mistakes proved to be too costly on this occasion! The team will be hoping to claim their first victory when they take on Hodge Hill School in their first league fixture next week, on Tuesday 13th October!

Wed 7th October 2015
U16 Arthur Terry              1 v 3       Handsworth Grammar School
Scorer:
S Watts

Match Report
Despite a bright start and taking a 1-0 lead into half-time, courtesy of a super finish from striker Sam Watts, the Yr11 boys struggled to take control of the game and were eventually made to pay for a combination of tepid defending and the spurning two 'clear-cut' chances.  During the game goalkeeper Dylan Mandaracas pulled off several top drawer saves to keep the opposition at bay, but the equaliser was conceded shortly into the second half.  The visitors then went ahead just 5 minutes short of the final whistle, and finally scored their third goal with literally the last kick of the match.  It was a disappointing result and performance overall - ending the team's chance to reclaim the BSSF trophy that they had managed to do on two previous occasions back in the 2011/12 and 2013/14 seasons! All is still to play for though in the district league and cup competitions.  The U16 boys are eager to put things right in their next outing, which could be in Rd2 of the district cup, where the Yr11's await the winners of the Rd1 tie between local school rivals Bishop Walsh and John Willmott.

THIS GIRL CAN

The P.E department are supporting the ‘THIS GIRL CAN’ campaign promoted by Sport England and as seen advertised on T.V!

Our aim is to raise the profile and awareness of the benefits of physical activity by celebrating the successes and achievements of students here at Arthur Terry.

We want your child to bring in a photo/poster (A4) of themselves taking part in their sport/ physical activity outside of school and then attach the AT logo and the THIS GIRL CAN logo, along with a slogan which matches their photo! Our display will then appear in the P.E block, helping inspire other girls that it is ‘cool’ to look ‘hot’ in P.E.

Please help us by encouraging your child to bring in an image.

Kind regards

Miss Horspool

Arthur Terry in School Games Success!

Wednesday 8th July saw us take four teams over to King Edwards School (Edgbaston) to attend the finals of the Birmingham School Games Finals, and what a successful day it was!

We had girls teams from Year 7/8 in Rounders, Netball and Cricket as well as our Year 9 Softball team competing in their own respective competitions against some of the best schools in Birmingham. Each competition varied in terms of teams taking part, but there were at least 7-9 other teams competing in each competition, so the odds were not in our favor!

The students were absolutely exceptional in how they performed and also how they represented the school during the day. The absence of minibuses meant we took the 45 students involved to the event via train!

I am delighted to report that our Netball, Cricket and Rounders team's all achieved Silver medals (2nd place), with our Year 9 Softball team achieving Bronze medals (3rd place). ALL TEAMS achieved a top-three spot. Despite having no Gold medalists the teams did exceptionally well, crowned in the top three of all Birmingham schools in each area!

Weather was perfect for a full day of sports competitions! Here the Softball competition (foreground) and Cricket competition (background).
Year 9 Softball Team - Bronze Medalists - (Back) Nathan Blundell, Conor Roberts-Kennedy, James Bevington, Joe Newey, Jake Ellis, Ethan Sinclair, Jack Carwardine, Matt Cotter, George Pegg, Will Edler. (Front) Sam Grimshaw, Jake Dunn.
