Loughborough University A-Level PE Trip

On Tuesday the 2^nd of December 2014, A-Level PE students were taken to Loughborough University for an educational visit.  The students, on arrival at Loughborough, were given a guided tour of the world class facilities before the practical sessions relating to their A Level Physiology unit of work began.   The day was pitched at their curriculum needs, with an experiential, practical set of workshops where the pupils engaged in physical tests similar to that of elite performers such as the VO2 Max test.  Students experienced how to conduct professional sports science tests and looked at how to interpret their data to improve performance. This was an exciting, inspirational day that enriched their physiology studies and inspired students to think about their university choices.

Aston Villa Girls Football Development Day

On Tuesday the 25^th of November pupils involved in the girl’s football team had the opportunity to attend Villa Park to receive specialist coaching as part of a football development day.  The pupils had the opportunity to improve their skills in the training ground and then play in a tournament against Bishop Walsh.   Pupils were then given a full tour of the ground with opportunities to get involved in a players press conference and enter onto the pitch through the player’s tunnel to the sounds from their favourite music.  It was a fantastic day, with memories that will last a life time. 

 

Girls Football Tournament Success

The Arthur Terry girl’s football team played at a regional football tournament on Thursday the 20^th of November against 10 other schools.  The girls won four out of their five games, with some incredible goals scored and saved.  The girls topped their group and made it through to the final round.  There was a point’s tie for 2^nd place, which meant it came down to goal difference with our girls narrowly missing out.   They played their socks off and did Arthur Terry incredibly proud by finishing in 3^rd place overall.  Well done girls

Swabey is Spot On!

Kieran Swabey's sudden death penalty shoot out save helped the Year 11 football team reach the final of the u16 district cup beating Plantsbrook 5-4 on penalties. 

Arthur Terry started the brighter of the two sides at Coles Lane with some neat passing exchanges in the opening few minutes with no real chances being created. As time passed, a few half chances were created by both teams; but resolute defending from Alfie and Scott ensured Kieran wasn't tested in the Arthur Terry Goal.

The opening goal was scored by Chris following superb build up play throughout the whole team. Arthur Terry had already posed questions down the right hand side in the opening stages but Henry Harris slipped a perfect pass through to Sam Griffiths, a neat cut back gave Chris the chance to fire past the keeper into the net.

The goal gave Arthur Terry confidence and they continued to get the ball wide and cause trouble for the Plantsbrook defenders, neat passing allowed Terry to create more chances but unfortunately they couldn't add to their tally before half-time. 

Half time score 1-0.  

The second half started with Ollie Pearce replacing an injured Jamie Lucas at left back and Plantsbrook attacking more frequently than they had in the first half. Some key defending from Jacob Dyte and Alfie ensured Arthur Terry didn't concede.

Arthur Terry could only try and play on the counter attack and tried releasing the ball to Chris and Tom but Plantsbrook kept pushing for the equalising goal and they got their rewards after 10 minutes of the second half. 

After the scores had been made level both teams strived to score the winner in normal time but with no clear cut chances being created by Arthur Terry they were fortunate to take the game to extra time as Plantsbrook hit the crossbar in the final minute of normal time.

End of normal time score 1-1.

The game was taken to extra time and both teams had key chances with the highlight being Plantsbrook hitting the post in the final few minutes and a couple of long shots from Michael Benson and Henry Harris being blocked by defenders. Tom managed to get past his defender and unfortunately couldn't get his shot away in the final minute.

The game was to be decided on penalties. Kieran managed to save the 3rd penalty and the 4th penalty was put over the crossbar but Arthur Terry couldn't take advantage of this and it was 3-3 after the first 5 penalties. 

Plantsbrook scored their first sudden death penalty, Max Hayes made sure the game continued by scoring his penalty. Cue Kieran's big moment. The Plantsbrook player struck the ball hard and towards the top corner but Kieran managed to guess the correct way and produce a fantastic save to give Alfie Bailey the chance to win the game with his spot kick. Alfie had never taken a penalty before and despite words of advice to just pass the ball into the bottom corner he opted to strike the ball down the middle and Arthur Terry won the shootout putting them into the final of the u16 district cup.

U15's Mixed Fortunes this Week

The Arthur Terry U15 side slumped to their first defeat in a little over 2 years, by being knocked out of the BSSF Cup Competition that they won last season at Villa Park, and by a team they had also defeated 5-0 in last season's ESS District Cup Final. The result, which also counted as a league fixture was naturally a huge disappointment; but in all fairness the opposition fully deserved the victory on the day. The game was 0-0 at the break and it stayed that way until just 15 minutes to go, when a contentious free-kick was awarded to the home side just meters outside the box. The opposing team reacted sharply and took the free kick quickly as our players switched off, which allowed one of their forwards to slot home the opener - unpressured/unchallenged and 1v1 well inside the area in front of goal leaving keeper Dylan Mandaracas no chance. 0-1 became 0-3 within 10 minutes and the game was well and truly over. The Arthur Terry boys did manage to score a consolation in the final few minutes with arguably the best goal of the game. Neat build up play from back to front was completed in the final third with incisive passes from Reece Hutchinson and Josiah Francis, that put striker Sam Watts through 1v1 who coolly lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper straight into the back of the net.  The Arthur Terry boys still sit top of the league table (see below) and have left a huge task for the chasing Great Barr to catch them, who will surely have to complete and win all of their remaining fixtures to overtake the team in top spot.

What a rollercoaster of a game! - Played in 'Monsoon like conditions' for much of the first half, the Arthur Terry boys seemed to put the setback of their loss from earlier in the week behind them by coasting to a 3-0 lead after just 20 minutes of the game.  Josiah Francis hit a double, before fellow striker Sam Watts hit a bullet of a free kick straight into the back of the net from the edge of the box. With the game appearing well under control, the opponents somehow managed to level the game to 3-3 by half time. Dixon capitalized on Arthur Terry's complacency and errors, and deservedly punished the team for this. A half time 'rallying team talk' was required and to the credit of each player, the boys put in a truly dominant second half display to secure the victory (...more than what the final score line suggests). Dylan Mandaracas making his outfield debut slotted in Arthur Terry's  fourth, before Josiah Francis completed a fantastic hat-trick to make the score 5-3. The hosts goal was continuously barraged and the score line could have easily reached double figures had it not been for the heroics of their goalkeeper, who pulled off several 'Gordon Banks-esque' saves inc. stopping a penalty from Sam Watts (Nb: weather conditions blamed!). The hosts scored their fourth and the final goal of the game with just a minute left on the clock!  A great game for the 'neutral' and a really well deserved win in the end!

Man of the Match:
A notable mention must go to Josiah Francis for a super hat-trick! - but overall, Daniel Taylor perhaps saved Arthur Terry's blushes from conceding more goals with key defending, as well as initiating counter attacks with superb passing from the back throughout the whole game.

Note: The victory sees the U15's progress to Rd4 (last 64 nationally) - well done boys!!

 

KS4 Rugby 7's

Thursday 23rd October

Arthur Terry took a squad of players made up of Y10 and Y11 students to the Sutton Coldfield rugby 7's tournament this week; sadly only 3 of the local schools decided to enter!

The boys comfortably won their first game against an inexperienced John Willmott team, with 6 unanswered tries that were put in by Jack Knowles (2), Daniel Usher (2), Kane Sedgely and Harry Palmer.  The score line was also added to with two conversions from Joe Tipson.

The second game in the round robin of fixtures was against Fairfax School, and they provided quite a contrast in quality to our first opponents.  The hosts showed their experience and gained a convincing victory in the end, which earned them first place overall.  The Arthur Terry boys put up a very competitive challenge and certainly made a fight of it from start to finish, and can be very proud of their efforts to finish runners up in the competition.

Year 8 Team continue outstanding league form with two wins in a week!

Mr Holliday's Year 8 Team continued a fine run of form in the U13 District Division 1 this week. The team scored 16 goals in two games, demonstrating the threat they pose going forward. 

Monday 20th October

Arthur Terry 5-3 John Wilmott

Arthur Terry faced a much tougher test against John Wilmott than the side they faced in last years League competition. A much improved opponent made Arthur Terry work for the victory. Arthur Terry missed a string of simple chances early on and took time to settle into the game. Kai Knight continued an outstanding run of goal scoring form with 2 goals. Charlie Painter got his first goal for the school, firing in from a knock down in the box. Dylan Russell and Luke Barnett also got themselves on the score sheet with neat finishes to complete the victory. 

Man of the Match: Jack Hawkins for tireless work rate on the Left Wing and quality of deliveries into the box. 

Wednesday 22nd October

Arthur Terry 11-3 Kingsbury

Arthur Terry returned to their very best form against Kingsbury, getting some revenge for a poor and most certainly bizarre 6-6 draw away at Kingsbury last season. 

Arthur Terry again started slowly, falling 1-0 behind in the first 4 minutes. This woke the team up though and they really pushed on from this points. Goal scorers were Kai Knight (2), Luke Barnett (2), Jonathan Grigg (2), Tom Land, OG and a hat trick for in-form striker and Man of the Match Dylan Russell. 

There were some exceptional performances to mention: Tom Land (RB) and Jonathan Grigg (RM) linked up incredibly well down the right hand side and took their goals well. Luke Barnett worked tirelessly in the middle of a 3-man midfield, again taking his goals well. Dylan Russell earned the Man of the Match award with a superb display in the 'Number 10 role', bringing others into play and scoring 3 excellent goals. 

The victories leave Arthur Terry in a commanding position at the top of the league table, with the disappointing draw against Bishop Walsh the only blemish on the campaign so far.

The team now look forward to a well-earned break over the winter period. We are yet to know who will face in the District Cup Semi-Finals later in the year. We have league matches still to play against Plantsbrook and North Birmingham Academy.

Year 7 Netball team off to a flying start!!

The Arthur Terry Year 7 Netball team got off to a flying start this year!

The team have had 10 training sessions this year already and got off to a superb start in their first matches. 

The A Team beat John Wilmott 17-1, whilst the B team secured an 8-2 victory. 

The girls involved have made a superb start and have invested a lot of time into training.

Sutton Coldfield Schools Cross Country Race

A group of Arthur Terry students ranging from Y8 to Y12 took part in the Sutton Coldfield Schools Cross Country competition today.  Teams comprised of Y8/9 girls, Y8/9 boys, Y10+ girls & Y10+ boys braved the 'cold and muddy' conditions to complete their respective courses and vie for the top placements.  All of our students completed their races and finished strongly, but stand-out performances came from Ben Horton (Y9) and Shaun Evans (Y12) who both secured 1st place finishes in their respective races! Notable mentions also go to Max Sellers (Y12) - 2nd place; Alex Jones (Y11) - 3rd place; Jessica Tarr (Y11) - 3rd place and Emile Alexander (Y8) - 3rd place.

Well done to everybody who took part for a fantastic effort!

Match Report:
The U15 side welcomed RSA Academy to the Arthur Terry School this afternoon, to compete for a place in the 3rd round of the English Schools Football Association Cup competition.  Both teams were well matched and the game proved to be a very evenly fought contest from the first blow of the whistle to the last.
Arthur Terry started the brighter of the two sides and were unlucky not to open the scoring very early on in the game, when striker Josiah Francis's fine effort hit the post and rebounded away from goal. The home side did not have to wait too long though before fellow striker Sam Watts netted the opener at close range, by converting a superb cross into the goal area that had been delivered by Josiah Francis. The visitors leveled the game shortly after this however, by taking advantage of some lack luster defending in the home team penalty area.  The game stayed level at 1-1 up to half-time.
The second half was as close a game could possibly be! Both sides battled hard in every challenge and threatened to break the deadlock in each attack that was made; ...a great spectacle for the 'neutral'.  The decisive moment of the match was without doubt the decision to award Arthur Terry a penalty kick, and subsequent red card for the offending RSA defender.  As the last defender, the unfortunate player had denied a clear goal scoring opportunity, by shoving striker Sam Watts in the back whilst on his way to striking the ball towards goal inside the opponents area.  Winger Reece Hutchinson stepped up to take the spot kick and converted clinically to the bottom right hand corner to put the home side 2-1 ahead.  Despite a gallant attempt to comeback into the game from the visiting RSA team, Arthur Terry made the extra player count and played out the final period of the game with confidence and composure.  Credit to both teams for a super match, but a brilliant and well fought result once again for Arthur Terry's U15 side - who remain undefeated in all 7 games played so far this season!

In what proved to be quite a scrappy game in the end, the Y10 team preserved their perfect wining record with a good 4-2 victory over a tenacious George Dixon team.  Arthur Terry raced to a 3-0 lead in the first half, with the goals coming courtesy from strikes by Josiah Francis, team captain Jack Logan and Sam Watts.  The visitors pulled a goal back just before the half-time break, which was almost gift wrapped via an odd bout of poor defending from the home team.  Dixon certainly rallied their efforts in the second half and applied quite a lot of pressure - but fortunately for Arthur Terry they lacked the quality and clinical finishing to make any of it count.  All hopes of a Dixon comeback were eventually dashed when Jack Pearson scored another of his trademark cross/free kick's from outside of the area. A final consolation goal was scored by the visitors with the last kick of the game.

Another Winning Start!

Broadway 0 - 7 Arthur Terry  

The Arthur Terry School sixth form football team played their first fixture of the season yesterday, an ESS District Cup Rd1 tie against Broadway.  The team comprised of students from Y12 and Y13, came out of the game with a comprehensive 7-0 victory …and now progress to the quarter final of the competition.  An early goal from midfielder Liam O’Neill helped to settle the nerves and get the team underway.  Further goals from Freddie Barley, Ryan Mike, Luke Bennett and 2 from Harry Humpherson helped to complete the rout.  A great result against inferior opposition gets the season underway on a positive note.

Year 8's edge past Perry Beeches Academy in ESFA Cup Thriler!

Mr Holliday's Year 8 Football Team were given a very strong test by Perry Beeches Academy in the first round of the English Schools FA Cup on Monday afternoon, edging a 3-2 win in a fantastic match. 

Heading into the game on the back of two fine victories, Arthur Terry Year 8's came up against a very well-organised and energetic Perry Beeches side who were there to win. AT were without influential captain Morgan McSheffrey, though he was the only absentee from the side.

Man of the Match Jonathan Grigg opened the scoring with a superb individual strike from 20 yards. Those who know Jonathan will know he does not score ordinary goals, and this one was no exception! The right-sided midfielder firing a superb strike across the Goalkeeper and into the top corner for 1-0.

It wasn't long until Perry Beeches equalised, with an onslaught of pressure leading to a Joe Delaney Own Goal that was entirely out of his control. 

Half Time: 1-1. 

Arthur Terry created a number of chances but couldn't find the net. The AT defensive line held strong, with Adam Perks and Jamie Biddle working hard. From a throw in on the left, Luke Barnett received the ball and with his first touch unleashed a superb strike with the outside of his foot, finding the top corner to make it 2-1!

Beeches came back stronger than ever, with their striker weaving his way through and slotting into the bottom corner to make it 2-2 with 6 minutes to go!

As AT piled forwards, substitute Dylan Russell ventured into the box and drove the ball across goal. His strike, whilst off target, his the Beeches defender and rolled into the bottom corner with seconds remaining on the clock. 

Arthur Terry 3-2 winners on the day and will count themselves lucky. We now face Langley School (Solihull) at Home on 14th October in Round 2.

U15 League Table - Updated 29th Sept 2015.

The Y10 boys maintained their 100% winning record this season, by defeating Sutton Coldfield school Bishop Walsh 4-2 in a league fixture that took place today.  After conceding two penalties in the first half (the first of which was converted, whilst the second thumped against the bar), Arthur Terry came from a goal down to go into the break 2-1 ahead.  Reece Hutchinson coolly dispatched the 'third penalty' of the game to level the match 1-1, and Left midfielder Harry Swift slotted in a cross shortly after this, after his perfectly timed run to the back post.  In the second half Arthur Terry continued to show their quality, whilst contending with 'robust' tactics from their opponents.  Reece Hutchinson added his second of the game to extend the lead to 3-1. However, Walsh got themselves back into the game after converting yet 'another penalty' that had been awarded to the home side. Arthur Terry's two goal cushion was soon restored though after Sam Watts released the ball to Josiah Francis on the edge of the box, whose silky footwork outwitted the defense and keeper with a superb curled strike into the net to seal the match once and for all. 
A great team effort today - too hard to pick just one man of the match.

U15 Winning Run Continues!

The U15 team travelled to local rivals John Willmott School and played out what proved to be their toughest game of the season so far. Two first half strikes from Sam Watts (a superb strike from just outside the box) and Josiah Francis gave the travelling team a two goal cushion at the break.  Willmott rallied in the second half and scored early on to create a very tense second half.  Despite Willmott's comeback attempt, another clinical finish from Josiah Francis pretty much settled the game for Arthur Terry and ultimately proved to be the decisive goal after the home team netted their second with just minutes left on the clock. District Cup Rd2 Opponents: North Birmingham Academy

Year 7's of to a flying start with Birmingham Cup Win!

The Year 7 football team played their first ever match on Tuesday 23^rd September against Kings Norton Boys School in the Travel West Midlands Cup. A squad of 15 players were selected to represent Arthur Terry, and all of them played their part in a very pleasing 2-1 victory.

The first half saw Arthur Terry dominate, without being able to turn possession and chances into goals. In the second half, after applying further pressure, captain Will Hussey broke the deadline with a fine finish. Kings Norton levelled the game up with 10 minutes remaining with a goal against the run of play, but with a few minutes remaining Jack Nation scored what turned out to be the winning goal with a fine strike.

Arthur Terry saw the game out and will now play Kings Heath Boys school in Round 2.

Jake Lamb was named man of the match after a fine defensive performance, but the whole team did themselves proud!

Well done to the Arthur Terry U15's for another fantastic performance and result today! Superstar striker and man of the match Sam Watts, continued his prolific start to the season by adding 5 goals to his personal tally.  Sam's impressive finishing included a first-half hat-trick that came within the first 15 minutes of the game! Other highlights included a fine display from midfielder Daniel Taylor (making his first start of the season after returning from injury) and after No.1 keeper Dylan Mandaracas shut out the opposition yet again, he is still yet to concede a goal this season!

Arthur Terry's double cup winning side from last season secured their second league win of the season, with a huge goal fest against Erdington based Kingsbury School & Sports College.  Despite a commendable and tenacious effort from the opposition, the game was quite a one sided contest from start to finish.  The scoring came courtesy of Samuel Watts (4), Josiah Francis (5), Reece Hutchinson, Harry Swift and an own goal.  It was a real dominant display from the Arthur Terry team today - lets hope this good form is taken into the Cup fixtures that are scheduled for next week.

Year 8's Win Opening Match of the Season

Last years League and District Cup Champions got off to a winning start in their 2014/15 League campaign, seeing off St Edmund Campion 5-1 at Home. 

The game was a chance for many of last year's players to show why they deserve to retain their place in the team. The first half was a poor one, with Arthur Terry conceding following a scramble in the box.

Campions' lead did not last long though, with Kai Knight equalising minutes later. With 5 minutes until half time Arthur Terry began to play football, with some neat, intricate passing in wide areas. It was during this time that Kai Knight grabbed his scond to give Arthur Terry a 2-1 lead at half time. 

Most of Mr Holliday's Year 7 squad have continued into the Year 8 team.

Half time saw the introduction of Dylan Russel in place of Harry Brophy and Harry Canning in place of Adam Perks. Arthur Terry began to pick up the pace and it wasn't long before Kai Knight completed his hat trick with a dipping shot from 25 yards lobbing the keeper. 

The home team continued to push forward. Good work from Jack Hawkins and Harry Canning led to Luke Barnett scoring from inside the box to make it 4-1. 

The Arthur Terry defence were rarely troubled in the second half, dealing with high balls and maintaining possession well. 

With moment left in the match, Jack Hawkins ventured down the left wing, cut in and struck an unstoppable shot into the far top corner. A superb strike and deserved for his outstanding work rate during the game. 

The Year 8's turn their attention to Cup Games now, with three cup competitions to take part in. They start with a Home match against Great Barr in the District Cup on Monday 22nd September, hoping to defend the trophy they won last season.

The Arthur Terry U15 football team kicked-off the new 2014-15 season today with a comprehensive 8-0 league victory over Erdington based School St Edmund Campion.  Sam Watts opened the scoring within two minutes of the kick-off, and then added a second before Jack Pearson hit a stunning 25 yard 'cross' free-kick to make the score 3-0 at half-time.  Sam Watts netted a further two goals in the second half, whilst the remaining goals came from midfielder Harry Swift, forward Jo Francis and defender and team captain Jack Logan (Penalty).

A huge credit goes to Sam Watts for his clinical finishing and four goal tally today, but the overall player of the match award, for his superb link-up play, goal assists and well taken strike goes to Jo Francis.

Sports Awards Evening A Huge Success!

At Arthur Terry we are fortunate to have such enthusiastic and passionate students when it comes to Sport. This years' Sports Awards evening looked to build upon the fantastic success of last years awards, and it certainly did that!

The awards took place on Thursday 3rd July at Arthur Terry School.The Awards are designed to recognise some of the outstanding effort and achievement our students apply to our subject area, whether this be through their talent, sporting success, effort, determination or resilience. 

The PE Department were joined on the evening by Associate Headteachers Mr Gill and Mr Warner, as well as Faculty Leader Mr Jordan.

Our Double-Winning Year 9 Football Team. The team scooped the Sutton, Erdington and Saltley District Cup as well as the Birmingham Schools Cup, the final of which was held at Villa Park! Congratulations to all involved.

The extremely talented Hannah Cook won the Sports Official of the Year Award. Hannah has an incredible talent in the form of her leadership skills. Her communication skills are exceptional and she sets an outstanding example to those around her. Well done Hannah for all of your hard work this year!

Mr Gill rounded off the evening with a very appropriate speech, recognising not only the fantastic achievement of our students but also our hard-working PE staff. He went on to thank all of the winners families for their ongoing support and congratulated those award winners on an extremely successful year!

Year 9's defeat Highclare in first competitive Softball match!

Arthur Terry Year 9 Softball team played there first competitive fixture against Highclare School on Tuesday 1st July. 

The team are relatively new to Softball, having only really experienced the Sport through core curriculum PE time. 

More recently the team travelled to Bishop Walsh School for the Sutton Schools Summer Tournament. They finished a very credible Third place, having finished runners up in the group stages!

The first competitive softball fixture was held at Arthur Terry. Both teams performed well in the Sutton Schools tournament so it was bound to be a very competitive fixture!

The teams played two innings of 10 minutes to try and get the most runs possible. Highclare won the toss and chose to put Arthur Terry into bat first. The lads made a strong total of 14 runs. Highclare replied in their innings with 11 runs, leaving Arthur Terry with a lead of three runs going into the second innings. 

Arthur Terry secured eight runs in their second innings to give a total of 22. This left Highclare with a target of 12 runs to win!

Arthur Terry fielded very well. Will Preece' bowling made it difficult for Highclare to secure as many runs as they had hoped. Aaron Rawlins also took the catch of the match with a few minutes to go, effortlessly catching a superb hit from Highclare' strongest batter. 

Time ran out for Highclare as they reached a total of 19 runs. Arthur Terry were the winners! 22-19. 

Both teams played their part in an excellent contest. The players shook hands and Arthur Terry even formed a guard of honour for Highclare, led by the ever enthusiastic Toby Winter!

Arthur Terry Athletes in North Birmingham Selection

Arthur Terry's sporting success stories continued last week when a host of our students were selected for the North Birmingham Athletics Team following successful trials at the Sutton Coldfield and North Birmingham School trials!

The students will compete in Solihull on June 14th.

The students listed below will now represent the North Birmingham Area Athletics team at the Birmingham championships in Solihull on Sat 14th June.  Top performers on the day will be in contention to progress further into the Midlands regional competition and then hopefully national stages!
